Conservation Reserves
Bringing people together to explore and conserve the world’s unique landscapes, cultures and ecosystems.

PATAGONIA

Inspired by its care and understanding of South America's remote regions, Explora reinforces its commitment to our natural and human heritage through its Conservation Reserves initiative. Starting in 2019, our team has been developing a new model that would allow us, through our reserves to expand conservation into the territory and over time, aiming to impact 1 million hectares in the next ten years. Patagonia has been explorer's inspiration for centuries as the only continental land of the world south of the 51 parallel. It's millenary landscapes of ice and stone, vibrant rivers, native forests and steppes abundant in wildlife reward the long journey. The original inhabitants were the Kawéskar, Yaghan, Selknam and Aónikenk people, now extinct, whose unusual height inspired the European myth of the Patagon (big-feet) giants and gave Patagonia its name. Today, the land is home to Patagonia’s Gauchos, who keep practicing their old traditions in their everyday life, welcoming the visitor with the natural hospitality of a territory bound by distance and solitude.

As philanthropy often fades in the long run, we start a venture that enables us to expand and accelerate conservation in the region and project it in perpetuity. Based on a sustainable model that joins business enterprise with non-profit commitment, the reserves grant 95% of their territory purely to exploration and conservation. The remaining 5% is subject to enterprises that include tourism, real state, research, and other facilities. They all meant to bring people together to support and participate in a wide range of conservation projects.

Thirty years ago, we began in Patagonia, a history of deep exploration that led us to be recognized as the World Leading Expedition Company 2019, after being first of South America’s for almost a decade. Through our conservation reserves, we push forward our drive for opening new routes, as we believe that only sustainable conservation will make exploration possible for future generations. Inspired by the same impulse that discovered the remote places of South America, we bring together entrepreneurial inventive with non-profit commitment into a business model that enables to conserve into perpetuity.

The urgent need for sustainability encouraged us to deepen our commitment to the territory and the people who belong and visit it. Our Conservation Reserves contribute to sustain Patagonia’s gaucho tradition and support today’s Kawesqar culture, while our School of Guides provides comprehensive and constant training to help others to explore, know, engage with and care about this region.

Our Patagonia Conservation Reserves rest in one of the world's most remote, unpopulated territories, with an average population density of less than two people per square kilometer. Known for centuries as Finis Terrae or "The Uttermost Part of the Earth," it is a region where wilderness removes the artificial and people can experience nature in its pure, original magnitude.

The outstanding geography, biodiversity, and traditions of Patagonia are a heritage for today and tomorrow’s generations. Our Conservation Reserves are committed to a future where people and nature can thrive by legally safeguarding our unique landscapes and ecosystems in partnership with local cultures and world-class science.
